Review: Robert Delong @ Lure, Los Angeles 05/28/15

Lexus Pop-Up Concert Series Powered By Pandora Featuring Robert DeLong

“Brands and bands are the current trend of the music industry. One helps the other get exposure to a specific market and the other has money and will pay for things… nice things. Thursday night at Lure in Hollywood, Pandora and Lexus threw together quite an incredible showcase. With an onlooking row of cars, selfie sticks for photo and hashtag, and indie electronica wiz Robert Delong playing his latest, it was a gig to remember.

Glassnote-backed, and originally from Seattle, Robert Delong played a multitude of songs from his upcoming release In The Cards (9/18) and the 2013 release Just Movement. Per his oeuvre, the Delong’s gadgets were in full force (Wii remote and other awesome things) as R.D. blasted through singles like “Just Movement”, “Long Way Down” and “Happy”. Review: Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds @ The Orpheum Theater, Los Angeles 05/20/15

noel

On the heels of his sophomore solo album, Chasing Yesterday, Noel Gallagher and his High Flying Birds returned to Los Angeles recently to play a sold out night at the newly restored Orpheum Theater in downtown LA. The venue itself was the perfect setting for an evening of new age dad rock, timeless songwriting, witty banter, and of course, in typical Gallagher fashion, not giving a fuck.

Rarely, if ever. will you go to a show (sold out or not) without any opening or support act. So leave it to the classic Scrooge of Noel Gallagher to be the one to not even bother with adding another act to the bill. But why should he, his fans will move heaven and earth for just the rare chance to see him. Critics alike can’t resist the opportunity to either admire ‘the talented’ Oasis brother Noel Gallagher, or more traditionally, find a reason to water him down to ‘has been’ status or a derivative melodic thief. Everybody will always want a glimpse at the bluntly worded Brit behind one of the self proclaimed biggest bands in the world. The good news, is that night it felt as if the wake of Oasis had finally subsided and fans were in attendance to see Noel Gallagher, the songwriter, deliver a collection of his favorite songs.

The main set consisted heavily of tracks off Noel’s self-titled debut and freshly released Chasing Yesterday LP. There’s little surprises to what Noel Gallagher does with his live show. While its quite excellent, there’s no frills. Sonically, it’s very reminiscent of ‘Don’t Believe The Truth’ era Oasis onward, his band is a 5 piece of guitars, keys, bass, drums, along with the occasional appearance of a small horn section. That’s about it, Noel doesn’t seem to care much about lights or visuals, or flashy moves on stage, he’s there to share songs. In good pitch and strong voice the seasoned rock star sang his way through solo highlights such as “Everybody’s On the Run”, “Lock All The Doors”, “If I Had Gun”, “Face Of God”, “The Death Of You And Me”. Hearing Noel Gallagher perform solo, you can get a great understanding of where he truly comes from musically. There’s always been an interesting combination of traditional Folk and Punk Rock roots in his instincts and delivery. Much of his new album ‘Chasing Yesterday’ nods toward 70s and 80s inspired Classic Rock like Tom Petty, The Band, Neil Young, and more. While those influences were always there, they sometimes seemed a bit shadowed by his indulgence in Pink Floyd, The Beatles and Stones, The Smiths, Stone Roses, all the usual Brit Classics to which Noel has endured critics’ scrutiny. Chasing Yesterday is surely Noel’s most adventurous genre pushing release to date. The album finds itself peering beyond the vary boundaries that Noel himself has set throughout his career, with arrangements, vocal melodies, and solo sections that you can tell had always been part of Noel’s depths and appreciation, but perhaps were ideas he thought weren’t right to explore on earlier projects. In short, as a follow up to his self-titled debut, Chasing Yesterday manages yet another and more expansive breath of fresh air for the songwriter.

Of course Gallagher snuck a few lesser expected Oasis cuts into the set, such as Noel’s signature rendition of B-side “Fade Away”, and the nostalgic punkier Definitely Maybe classic, “Digsy’s Dinner”. Between tunes there was little talking from Noel, until almost like script, he took cues from friendly hecklers shouting, ‘where’s Liam?!’. Taking in stride (this dude has to have heard that question a million times) Noel would happily banter back ‘who’s Liam’ or would roll into a short story about how he last time he was in LA he found himself having an ‘Extraordinary evening with Marilyn Manson and his brother’. Noel Gallagher’s encore consisted of more predictable Oasis songs like “Champagne Supernova”, “The Master Plan”, and “Don’t Look Back In Anger”. In some ways the encore felt unfortunate, with issue not being that the songs didn’t sound incredible; or that these tunes weren’t great songs, nor that fans were singing along in ecstatic joy to hear them, but more so the idea that perhaps one of the best and prolific songwriters of the last 30 years just might himself finally believe that his greatest songwriting efforts have been achieved. Making you wonder what a title like Chasing Yesterday really means to him.

Bruce Rave Recaps The Great Escape

greatescape

B3’s Bruce Rave headed Brighton earlier this month to take in UK breaking artist festival The Great Escape. Sample below Bruce’s notes on some selected bands to keep tabs on the in nearest future.

bohicas

The Bohicas are blistering live with huge guitar hooks.

dutchuncles

Dutch Uncles are very precise with some songs hookier than others.

aquilo

Aquilo have immense talent and played a pretty set that endured sound problems.

PINS

The girl band Pins reminds many of Best Coast (and they’ve toured together), but they do what they do well with good songs and tight playing.

boxedin

Boxed In is a band that was unfamiliar to me and they nicely blend electro and rock.

hippocampus

Hippo Campus had only played live in Minnesota until this March, and this UK gig impressed the crowd.

rayboy

Rat Boy attracted a bevy of high-end industry types. He’s considered hip hop but to me his high energy set was much more on the rock side.

slaves

Slaves was one of the most buzzed bands. If you like it hard, heavy, and humorous with some punk anger mixed in, this set would have been right up your alley.

rhodes

On the other hand, Rhodes was equally effective in a soft and sweet way.

springking2

Spring King are a fun guitar band that plays fast with melody.

blossoms

Blossoms matched their buzz with a good set in the very difficult Green Door Store venue.

maccabees

The surprise closing set was by Maccabees. This was my first experience where most people in the hall were fans, since UK industry peeps know this band real well. While staid reactions were the norm, this set resulted in animated fans singing along.

Lots of bands I would have liked to see, time permitting, including The Vaccines, Alabama Shakes, Bully and The Strypes.

Check out Bruce’s “Go Deep” show on Fridays 1-3 pm Pacific, 4-6 pm Eastern, 9-11pm GMT. Also listen to past shows at Bruce’s blog and follow Bruce on Twitter.

Preview: Twin Peaks @ HiFi Deli Club, Los Angeles on Sat. 05/30

twinpeaks

Hailing from Chicago, IL, Grand Jury band Twin Peaks swing by LA on 5/30 to play the HiFi Deli Club. The garage rock/punk rockers are currently on the “Isolated Incident” tour with Modern Vices and judging by the reaction on social media, it’s going to be a loud and sweaty time. Which for me, is exactly what I’m looking for. While guitars have for the most have been pretty silent in Top 40 recently, the scene has slowly been bubbling under with bands like Twin Peaks leading the charge. On the back of recent release on Grand Jury Records (Wild Onion, now available), the 5 piece have been making a name for themselves, city by city. Preview by Tony Perkis.

Review: Wolf Alice @ Shepherd’s Bush Empire, London 04/03/15

Review by Nathan Hetherington / Photo by Braden Fletcher

London four-piece Wolf Alice are on the brink of releasing their debut album “My Love Is Cool” after 3 or so years of putting out buzz worthy EPs, touring extensively and particularly impressing at their numerous festivals appearances. This is their biggest headline show to date, in the ornate Shepherds Bush Empire in West London. It’s sold out and avid fans are said to be queuing outside the venue from 11am so it’s fair to say that there’s a certain level of expectation surrounding this show.

Bloody Knees have pleasure of opening up and play a set of material unlike anything SBE has likely seen before. It’s a glorious polarity between regal surroundings and raucous modern punk sounds, complete with bare chests and baseball caps the four-piece from Cambridge put on a fascinating display of raw, primal energy that stunned a youthful crowd.

Next up from Brighton is another example of an exciting guitar band with a potentially huge summer ahead of them. Don’t be put off by the name, The Magic Gang bare a charming resemblance to 80’s US college rock sounds and with a confident wall of backing vocals and nostalgic hooks they effortlessly proved their worth as one of indie music’s hottest prospects. Early track ‘She Won’t Ghost’ and current single ‘Alright’ stand out with the kind of huge choruses that will no doubt be echoing around the festival fields in a few months time.

Wolf Alice then take the stage to deliver a set of hard hitting material. Opening with “Fluffy” and “She”, both tracks that earned them so much attention in 2013 and the swirling crowd respond immediately to the sounds reverberating around the theatre. It’s a flawless, ballsy performance from a band that have been yearning to play bigger stages for a while and it was a wholly rewarding experience to witness Ellie Rowsell commanding the audience so confidently as she shrieked and howled her way through their now formidable catalogue.

There is nothing understated about Wolf Alice any more, they dress like rock stars in front of a shimmering stage set, firing off confetti canons and smoke whilst leaping into the crowd – but most importantly it’s their songwriting and production that isn’t letting up here, getting girthier and more raucous by the minute. “Giant Peach” is a perfect example of how their thunderous drums and face ripping guitars are taking their sound from the realms of folk-tinged pop, to a whole other level of world dominating grunge rock. Rightly so this song is saved for the end of the set, right before an encore of yet more big hitters including “Moaning Lisa Smile”, before the night draws to a satisfying close.

Review: Niia & Phantoms @ Red Bull Sound Select, L.A. 03/25/15

niiaredbull

Review by Tony Perkis / Photos by Colin Young-Wolff

This month’s installment of Red Bull Sound Select at The Sayers Club featured Phantoms and NIIA.

Phantoms, consisting of the duo Kyle Kaplan and Vinnie Pergola, blasted onto the stage first. Their mix of dark, deep house beats and pop got the crowd vibing early. Taking a page out of a Disclosure-esque playbook, these two were all over controlling gadgets and keyboards, manipulating the beat that rocked the small venue. Their catchy single “Broken Halos” struck a chord as did the duo’s nice Tame Impala remix.

Headlining the set, the sensational NIIA, seemed to own every second in front of the audience. Rolling through her 2014 EP “Generation Blue” and playing the new single “David’s House” the Robin Hannibal (Quadron, Rhye)-produced jazz singer was flawless. Her looks may grasp people almost immediately, but her voice is one to look out for on pop radio shortly. “Body” is a hit and a new favorite of mine. The covers she performed from Kate Bush to No Doubt to the BADBADNOTGOOD reinterpretation of Future Island’s “Seasons (Waiting On You)” were sublime. Niia is one to watch on a major scale for sure.
