Vondelpark – Always Forever

vondelpark

The dreamy “Always Forever” is single numero dos from South London band Vondelpark’s very very nice Seabed LP. Today, the UK trio released a sunkissed Asian beach wedding-referencing clip for the track that gives us a valid excuse to post up this great track. If you’re in the UK and live in or near one of the bigger towns, Vondelpark is likely rolling through your hood sometime during May. Sample that below.

May 5 – Manchester, UK @ Islington Mill Factory
May 11 – Rome, IT @ Spring Attitude Festival
May 17 – Edinburgh, UK @ Sneaky Petes
May 18 – Glasgow, UK @ Stag & Dagger
May 24 – Amsterdam, NL @ London Calling Festival
May 25 – London, UK @ Field Day
May 28 – Brighton, UK @ Green Door Store
May 29 – Leeds, UK @ A Nation of Shopkeepers
June 6 – Sheffield, UK @ Bungalows and Bears

Josefina Sanner – Do You Remember

josefena sanner

The Stockholm-based Josefina Sanner delivers a “Swedish surprise” with the exceptional pop track, “Do You Remember”. Outfitted chorus to verse with the sharpest hooks and crispest melodies, (and a cool guitar figure throughout much of the track that’ll feel like you’re in the middle of some sort of really cool Nordic sled race scene) “Do You Remember” is built for maximum quality and re-listenability. Already a critical darling in Sweden, Sanner is set to release more English language song this year and it’s not unreasonable to think she’ll conquer that linguistic sphere as well.

Cour Vette – Cafe Disco x At Night (Demo)

Not much is known about the recently created Cour Vette, but by the tracks released so far, you can tell there is some talent behind those decks. Canadian producer Teen Daze has been dropping Cour Vette’s new release via Facebook, which leads me to believe that it just may be him under a different moniker. Either way, tracks like “Cafe Disco” take me back to some great French House records, and not just the obvious Daft Punk, but early releases from Ed Banger Records, Kitsuné and other Parisian dance labels. Walking Shapes – Pusher

NYC band Walking Shapes (ex-Click Clack Boom) come up aces on their first major release “Pusher”. The syncopated drum/guitar combos and hooky melodies remind us a bit of Radiohead’s “15 Step”, if instead of being “really into” Flying Lotus and bowler hats, Thom Yorke hung out more at the beach. A+ track, boys.

WRITER – Disparate Youth (Santigold Cover)

Were loving this filthy new take on “Disparate Youth” by ‘ghettotech’ garage rockers WRITER. The Brooklyn, NY based duo are pretty shameless in their interpretation of the rhythmic hit, exploring scuffed layers and distortion beyond recognition set to a nicely juxtaposed mid-tempo stroll and relaxed vocal. Sample the track below and besure to check out the band’s new LP titled Brotherface available October 30 via 3 Syllables.

Nas – Cherry Wine (Feat. Amy Winehouse) (Prod. Salaam Remi)

One of the most anticipated tracks on Nas’ so-far-so-good upcoming LP Life Is Good, the Salaam-Remi produced “Cherry Wine” just got its proper debut on Tim Westwood’s Radio 1 show. Obviously, the late Ms. Winehouse’s presence on this track makes for a must listen sort of curiosity. “Cherry Wine” is nice though, cooking down Salaam’s silky smooth production touch to speak vitality into rap journeyman Nas’ inspired (for latter day Nas) rhymes. Paper Lions – San Simeon

Contributed by Jon Herriot

paper_lions

Canadian indie pop/rockers Paper Lions have released “San Simeon” as a preview of their new full length that they just finished recording. I’m a huge fan of these guys, they always have catchy tunes with fun, peppy vocals. Nobody talks about them enough though, there wasn’t a song on their EP Trophies that I didn’t like, which is pretty rare.

SHOW REVIEW: Howler / The Static Jacks / TOPS @ The Echo LA, March 23rd, 2012

Review by Chris Gedos

howlerecho
PHOTO: Jordan Gatesmith of Howler

The only way to accurately judge Howler’s debut album is to break it down and critique each individual variable, such as songs, production, musicianship, originality, etc., for to approach it otherwise forces one to harp upon Is This It. Not that America Give Up is trying to be The Strokes verbatim, but the two bands have already been so relentlessly linked by the populace that we’re really beating a horse dead by this point. Two American bands who both broke big in England first and both are trying to save “Garage Rock” and etc., which many regard as the most pure descendant of that old time rock n’ roll. Many bands have done the same thing before and after, the story is old, let’s move on.

Howler is from Minneapolis, which gave us The Replacements and Husker Dü, and Howler does compare favorably with Tim at moments, namely “This One’s Different” and “America”, but for me America Give Up really calls to mind a different mid-80’s masterpiece, Psychocandy, by the Scottish band, Jesus and Mary Chain. Both Psychocandy and America Give Up succeed by merging pop and noise while transcending the noise pop moniker. Jesus and Mary Chain wrote noisy songs that want to be poppier, while Howler writes poppy songs which want to be noisier. If WU LYF plays “Heavy Pop”, Howler plays “angry pop”, music too robust for the Warped Tour Scene but also too supposedly pastiche for some tastemakers, but for those more discerning it’s a wonderful break from the self-serious rock we’ve been too accustomed to as of late.

America Give Up is a great album, incredibly listenable from A to Z, a 2012 album with a proper A-side and a B-side. So with all these thoughts swirling about, I was very interested to hear Howler live. Would they play America Give Up verbatim?

Mad props to current tour-mates The Static Jacks for warming up the crowd right before Howler. Fresh on the heels of their first full-length, If You’re Young, they’re also about to tour for the second time with The Wombats. Static Jacks brought a powerful and thoroughly enjoyable set with pretty good songs across the board. Their style’s slightly more pop-punk than a band like Howler, but it’s loud and abrasive and all that good stuff. In other words: they sound exactly how a band like them should sound. They’ve also got the same ironic sense of humor as Mr. Gatesmith and cohorts. The Static Jacks hail from New Jersey; fans of fellow Jerseyites, The Milwaukees, will find much to love. Very good live band.

Howler opened their set with “Wailing (Making Out)”, and that magical guitar lick about halfway through the song. That’s the thing about Howler: for me their songs blend together somewhat, but they have these magical moments which rank with the great debuts of yesteryear. They’ve also had the good fortune of honing their live set in front of a highly critical UK audience. They therefore weren’t fazed by the zombified LA crowd, i.e. no one was grooving to these insanely catchy tunes. From there they transitioned into LP opener “Beach Sluts”, a song which sets the tone for what Howler’s about. The song they played from the EP is a welcome departure from the LP, as the EP showcases Gatesmith’s versatility as a lyricist. We fans kept screaming out for the song “Free Drunk”, but the band never played it, rather keeping the set short and sweet, nine songs in barely half an hour. It would’ve been nice to hear a couple more, but Howler chose to let their youthful hubris shine on a cool March evening at the Echo. They instead took some time with fans after the set, something which occurs less and less often these days in an attempt to make a band seem more ‘mysterious’. But Howler is a transparent band (check out their tour videos) with a memorable if transparent album. What you see is what you get. They wouldn’t have it any other way.

Theme Park – Two Hours

By Chris Gedos

theme-park-3

Theme Park’s new single, “Two Hours”, premiered on Huw Stephen’s Radio 1 show late Wednesday night. A unanimous hit here @b3science HQ, the track features a rollicking beat with a little less Sting / Orange Juice / Reggae tinge, in contrast to their previous release, “Ghosts”. The lush, Ian Broudie style production on “Two Hours” is the sort of pop rock sound which toes the threshold without going overboard. The single is set for official release on 2 April, so I would expect the LP sometime this summer. These cats are one timeless hook away from dropping the “Pumped Up Kicks” of 2k12.

Teen Daze – Brooklyn Sunburn

By Jon Herriot

teen-daze

Whenever I listen to Teen Daze I always find myself grooving out a little bit. “Brooklyn Sunburn” starts out nice and slow, and builds into something funky. There is one continuous underlying beat but TD keeps us captured throughout the entire track with subtle changes and twists around every corner, including some haunting backing vocals from LA artist Steph Thompson. The new Teen Daze LP All of Us comes out on May 22nd, make sure you check it out!
